The history of Nice Airport has its roots thanks to one of these pioneers, Captain FERBER.

This soldier, then aged 39, to escape from the greyness of his barracks, dreamed of flying away to gain wide open spaces.

In 1901 he invented a glider, then a second one with which he made a jump of 50 meters at Beuil. But he had to wait until 1903 to equip his glider with an engine.

For this first test, he hung his flying machine on a "crane" which turned like a real merry-go-round.

FERBER will die 6 years later in a crash in Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Aviation was only popular as a spectacle, its practice remaining the prerogative of a few wealthy and reckless sportsmen.

Flying is still dangerous, Ferber's death a few months earlier is proof.

Years passed and in 1912, the Nice flying club fitted out the California airfield, as described in the "Riviéra journal" of January 28, 1912 under the title "Aviation in Nice".

The newspaper pays tribute to the club that had the California land developed at its expense and built hangars.

At that time the land that bordered the sea was reserved for the military and further away from the shore was the Hippodrome de Nice.

Consequently Nice will decide to take part in the development of aviation by organizing an air meeting in April 1910, whose posters became famous.

Friday, April 15, 1910, at noon, is kicked off the aviation meeting of Nice for the first time

A great aeronautical competition that promises some 250,000 francs in prizes to committed aviators ready to cross paths.

There are several events: Totalization of distances price (130,716 km), Launch price without passengers (80 m), Launch price with passengers (100 m) and finally, Lap price: 4 laps 6 km (6 minutes, 5 seconds, 3/5).

Note that this Friday, April 15, 1910, the Nice aviation meeting welcomes a renowned spectator, in the person of the King of Sweden, who took advantage of his presence in the region for a few days vacation to come and contemplate the spectacle offered by the aviators.

It was an extraordinary success:

100,000 spectators from all over the world gathered for 15 days in California to celebrate aviation.

It was in its infancy. But the enthusiasm already animated the spirits which still had in memory the exploit of Louis BLERIOT crossing the Channel a year before.

Public officials and local businesses wanted to seize this opportunity to mark Nice with this aerial passion.
For this they had not hesitated to invest colossal sums. The attraction of the Riviera did the rest.

The launch of the creation of the airport was given: it was then only a large field where some hangars had been built. Unfortunately a month before the start of the meeting, these collapsed, the fragility of the terrain being called into question.

To commemorate this event, VATFRANCE will open the platform for you on April 25 between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

The California field will be staffed for the occasion with its best controllers to allow you to take off, land or make laps in the best conditions on one of the most pleasant terrain in France

With historic planes or your favorite plane come to Nice this April 25
