Greenland. The largest island in the world. A vast land of Arctic splendour, European style and ancient customs. Open to explorers on Sunday 8th February 2015 between 16:00z and 22:00z.

Staffed by controllers from VATSIM Scandinavia, Greenland has long been one of the quietest countries on VATSIM. Not anymore! Our professional team will be providing unique ATC and AFIS services throughout this enormous country, stretching from the Atlantic right up to some of the northernmost airports in the world.

Fly. Explore. Discover.

Briefing:
Greenland is mainly an information service country and the vast majority of 'ATC' will in fact be limited to instructions that are 'at your discretion'. These are provided by Aerodrome Flight Information Officers (AFIS - xxxx_I_TWR) or the Area Information Service 'Söndreström Information' (BGGL_FSS) which covers all Greenlandic airports top-down. It is crucial that pilots...

1) Familiarise themselves with our phraseology examples
2) Be prepared to give lots of position reports (on the ground, departing, in cruise, on approach, on final, vacating runway).
3) Be patient and courteous to other pilots.
4) Remain in contact with AFIS officers at all times, even in uncontrolled airspace. Do not push, taxi or takeoff without asking your AFIS officer.

Most Greenlandic airports have extremely short runways and only 1 or 2 parking spots. If there is no parking spot available, you are free to park on the grass :) Please help us by flying medium to small aircraft and not big jets unless you want to practise your landing skills!

Finally, we encourage you to fly domestic flights, not international, as there will be limited ATC beyond Greenland's borders.

Note 1. Nearby Iceland and Canada will NOT be fully staffed.
Note 2. Thule Air Base (BGTL) will be operating as a civilian airport, not as an air force base.

Cordialement
